Child's Earflap Beanie

Supplies
worsted weight yarn
size 6 knitting needles, DPNs or circular 

Ear Flaps
CO 4 stitches.
Row 1: K1, P to last stitch, K1.
Row 2: K1, Kfb, K to last 2 stitches, Kfb, K1.
Repeat these two rows until there are 18 stitches on the needles.
Knit straight until piece measures 4" (I thought they were a tad long, so you could certainly go shorter here).
Cut yarn, leaving a 12″ tail, and leave the earflap on its DPN.
Repeat for second ear flap.

Hat
Using a cable cast on, CO 11 stitches on the circular needle. Knit the 18 stitches from first ear flap, then CO 32 stitches. K18 from second ear flap, then CO 11.

Join, being careful not to twist stitches, place marker and begin knitting in the round. As you knit around this first row, you’ll notice four gaps, on either side of each ear flap. When you get to those, K2tog to close them up.

Continue knitting all rounds until hat measures 5" from the cast-on row. I striped the hat using 5 different colors, 5 rows each.

Begin the decreases as follows, switching to DPNs when the diameter of the hat is too small for your circular needle. Honestly, I think I had to fudge it a little here because the math didn't work out quite right (I think I knitted 3 together in one or two places to make it work all the way around).
(Decrease) Row 1: *9, K2tog*
Row 2: K all sts 
(Decrease) Row 3: *K8, K2tog*
Row 4: K all sts
(Decrease) row 5: *K7,  K2tog*
Row 6: K all sts
(Decrease) row 7: *K6, K2tog*
Row 8: K all sts
Decrease in this manner until there are about 35 sts on the needles.
Then decrease in the same manner, omitting the “k all sts” rows, until there are 7 sts remaining.
Pull yarn through the last 7 sts with a tapestry needle, pull through to inside and weave in end.

Finishing
Weave in all ends. Make some pom-poms if that is your thing. 
There are a few ways you can add straps — pick up 3-4 sts and knit in garter stitch or seed stitch until desired length. OR pick up 3-4 stitches and knit i-cord until desired length. OR, thread through three long pieces of yarn and braid the double-strands until desired length, then tie off and trim (that's what I did).

Beanie with ear flap for babies

Size: Newborn (Infant, Li’l Kid)
(These are roughly 14″, 16″, and 18″ around, for heads a wee bit larger than those measurements.)

Supplies:

• about 50g of DK weight yarn (I used KnitPicks Merino Style — less than one skein for the newborn size — but you can use any yarn that knits to gauge. RYC Cashsoft DK would be perfect!)
• at least three DPNs and a matching 16″ circular needle (I used US6, but again, you can use whatever knits to gauge)
• one stitch marker

Gauge: 19 sts = 4″ in stockinette stitch (5 sts/inch is probably close enough!)

Ear Flaps
CO 7 stitches.
Row 1: K1, P to last stitch, K1.
Row 2: K1, Kfb, K to last 2 stitches, Kfb, K1.
Repeat these two rows until there are 15 stitches on the needles.

Knit straight until piece measures 2.75″ (3″, 3.25″).
Cut yarn, leaving a 12″ tail, and leave the earflap on its DPN.
Repeat for second ear flap.

Hat
Using a cable cast on, CO 10 (12, 14) stitches on the circular needle. Knit the 15 stitches from first ear flap, then CO 24 (27, 30) stitches. K15 from second ear flap, then CO 10 (12, 14).

Join, being careful not to twist stitches, place marker and begin knitting in the round. As you knit around this first row, you’ll notice four gaps, on either side of each ear flap. When you get to those, K2tog to close them up. At the end of the round, you should have 70 (77, 84) stitches on the needles.

Continue knitting all rounds until hat measures 3″ (3.5″, 4″) from the cast-on row. (Rows 4-12 would be a great place for colorwork!) Then begin the decreases as follows, switching to DPNs or two circs (video here) when the diameter of the hat is too small for your circular needle:

(Decrease) Row 1: *K8 (9, 10), K2tog*
Row 2: K all sts
(Decrease) row 3: *K7 (8, 9), K2tog*
Row 4: K all sts
(Decrease) row 5: *K6 (7, 8), K2tog*
Row 6: K all sts

Decrease in this manner until there are 35 sts on the needles.
Then decrease in the same manner, omitting the “k all sts” rows, until there are 7 sts remaining.
Pull yarn through the last 7 sts with a tapestry needle, pull through to inside and weave in end.

Finishing
Weave in all ends. (I like to leave the tails where I ended the earflaps long so that I can use them to tighten up of otherwise correct anything that looks wonky around the earflap join area.)

There are a few ways you can add straps — pick up 3-4 sts and knit in garter stitch or seed stitch until desired length. OR pick up 3-4 stitches and knit i-cord until desired length. OR, thread through three long pieces of yarn and braid the double-strands until desired length, then tie off and trim.

Block and lay flat to dry.

Very pretty and stylish hat.

This little hat will fit a newborn baby.
Unstretched measurements -
at ribbing 10"
at hat body 14,5"

It sure will look cute on any baby in the Fall or Winter.

Color choice is up to you.

It could be Granny Smith, Red or Yellow Delicious, even Pink.

The hat is seamless, so use your circular or DPN's and favorite method.

If you'd like to go 1 size up with your needles, the size will go up too.
or better yet - add more stitches.

Let's get going!

You'll need:

* 1/3 skein of Lions Brand Vanna's Choice in color 180 "Cranberry" (or pink, yellow, light green)

* Small amount of Brown and Green yarn
* 16" circular needles, size #6/4.00 mm
* 4 DPN's size #7/4,5mm
* 1 stitch marker or scrap of yarn to mark beginning
* tapestry needle

Instruction:

With (Main) Red yarn loosely cast on 54 sts with #7 needles .
I use a long-tale cast-on method.
Join work in the round, make sure you don't twist your work. Place marker.
Continue :
1-9 rows - Switch to #6 DPN needles - 18sts on each (of 3).
Knit 1x1 or 2x2 rib
10 row - Switch to #7 circular needles.
Knit 4, *1 increase (use your favorite method), knit 9 sts*, repeat from * to *=60 sts
(the segment  rapport is multiple of 10)
11 -19 rows - knit
20 row - *knit 8, 2 tog*...
21 and all odd rows - knit
22 row - *knit 7, 2 tog*...
24 row - *knit 6, 2 tog*...
26 row - *knit 5, 2 tog*...
continue decreasing in this manner, until you have 6 sts left.

Cut Red (main) yarn, leaving a tail about 2" long.
Attach Brown yarn to the tail.
Switch to 1 DPN needle #6.
Now you will knit I-cord (there's lots of good videos on YouTube).
1 row - 2 tog, knit the rest = 5sts
2-8 rows - knit

Cut the yarn, leaving long tail, using tapestry needle or crochet hook, thread the tail trough the loops, pull tight. Secure with a knot and pull to the inside of the hat.

Attach the leaf.
I crocheted mine.

Leaf Pattern:

Materials:
Size 5 straight needles
Green DK yarn
2 double pointed needles
wool needle

Pattern:

Cast on 3 stitches
Row 1: Knit into the front and back of the first stitch, purl, knit into the front and back of the last stitch. (5 stitches)
Row 2: Knit row
Row 3: Knit into the front and back of the first stitch, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, knit into the front and back of the last stitch. ( 7 stitches)
Row 4: Knit row
Row 5: Knit into the front and back of the first stitch, knit 2, purl 1, knit 2, knit into the front and back of the last stitch. ( 9 stitches)
Row 6: Knit row
Row 7: Knit 4 stitches, purl 1, Knit 4 stitches
Row 8: Knit row.
Alternate rows 7 and 8 three times.
Row 15: Knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch. (7 stitches)
Row 16: Knit
Row 17: Knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together, purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch. (5 stitches)
Row 18: Knit
Row 19: Knit 2 stitches together, purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together. (3 stitches)
Row 20: Knit
Row 21: Knit 3 stitches together.
Bind off.

Sew in the ends neatly and for the leaf stem, pick up two stitches at the base of the leaf and knit an i-cord for about an inch.

"Lemon Grass" Slouch Hat

I used size 9 circular needles. Turned out to be a child's sized hat. I would add to the number of cast-on stitches. Also, end sooner than the last 8 stitches! (Maybe end at 16?)

Size US 10 1/2 DPN’s (6.5mm)

Cast on 56 stitches(Knit 1 Purl 1) Rep to end for ribbing- join stitches so you are knitting in the roundRepeat for 8 rowsSwitch to a seed stitch (Knit 1 Purl 1) rep to end of row

(Quick tip: Reader GMC tried this pattern and said the following:  “knit one round even before the seed stitch rounds and Kfb of the first stitch in that knit round to get an odd number so I could just go round and round in seed stitch w/o really thinking about it” That is a great, GREAT idea. Now I am kind of embarrassed that I didn’t think of that before!)

Repeat for 26 rowsDecrease by K2T at the end of every needle (every 11th and 12th stitch knit together)Repeat until you have 8 stitches, then cut yarn, leaving 12 inch tail

Pull the tail yarn through remaining 8 stitches, cinch tight, weave in ends.

Baby Booties

Size 6 needles for Newborn - 3 months sized and soft sport weight or baby 
weight yarn (less than 1 ounce)

Size 8 needles and soft 4 ply worsted weight yarn for slightly larger booties 
(4 - 6 month sized)
Cast on 32 sts 
Row 1-16:  Knit each row (I think I did 2 less rows)
Row 17: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of row.  Knit across.
Row 18: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of row.  Purl across.  (20 sts left)
Row 19: Knit across row.
Row 20: Purl across row.
Rows 21 thru Row 30:  Repeat Rows 19 and 20 (I think did 4 less rows)
Row 31: K2 together across row.  (10 sts left)
Row 32: P2 tog across row. (5 sts left)
Cut a yarn tail about 12" long, thread it onto yarn needle and weave it through 
the last 5 sts.  Remove from needle and pull tightly to form toe.

Fold bootie in half and stitch up the top of the foot and then up the cuff, back stitch 
3 sts to secure.  Cut yarn. 

Start yarn up again on other side of bootie and secure the yarn tail, stitch all the 
way down the other side, and secure with 3 back stitches. Fold the top 1/2" or so 
down when finished. Now knit another one!

Knit Flower (for headband)

Made with size 9 and 2 needles

Made with size 6 and 2 needles

Knitted two flowers and layered for above headbands 

Cast on 4 sts (leaving 4-5" tail)
Row 1: (RS) Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), k3 
            (5sts).
Row 2: Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), p4 (6sts). 
            (At same time, anchor tail thread by knitting/purling it along with 3-4 
            stitches.)
Row 3: Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), k5 (7sts).
Row 4: Knit in front and back loop of first stitch (increasing one stitch), p6 (8sts). 
             Cut yarn and leave sts on needle, leaving 4-5" tail.

Make 4 more petals (casting on the first four sts on the needle holding the 
prior petals). Do not cut the yarn after making the fifth petal.

Row 5: Join petals by knitting 40sts. (At same time, anchor tail threads by 
             knitting them along with 3-4 stitches.)
Row 6: (P2tog) across (20 sts).
Row 7: (K2tog) across (10 sts).
Row 8: (p2tog, p3 tog, p2tog, p3tog) (4 sts).

Cut yarn leaving a 15-inch tail. Thread yarn onto tapestry needle and run through the four sts. Pull tight and anchor thread. Continue with same thread (on purl side) and sew open edges of 1st and 5th petal together loosely. Work thread back to center of flower. Use thread to sew to the headband (or other project).

SIZE: 3 months (6-12 month, 1T-2T)

To fit head size: 14-17" (16-19", 18-20")

Needle: circular US size 8 (or a 40" circular and used the magic loop method)

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 4.5 st/inch

Pattern: 

Cast on 60 (66, 72) st.

Place marker and join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.

Row 1-6: *K1 P1, repeat from * to end of each row (1x1 ribbing).

Row 7 (Eyelet row): *K1, YO, k2tog, repeat from * to end of row.

Knit in stockinette (knit every stitch) until hat measures 4.5 (5, 6.5) inches from cast on edge.

Begin Decreases to shape top of hat:

Row 1: *K4, k2tog, repeat from * to end of row. 50(55, 60) st.

Row 2: knit all stitches

Row 3: *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to end of row. 40(44, 48) st.

Row 4: knit all stitches.

Row 5: *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to end of row. 30(33, 36) st.
